The Full Story

Mission

My name is Michelle Solano and I am currently a senior at Worcester State University. This website was made for my capstone project which talks about the significance of emotional abuse. I want to bring awareness to emotional abuse because it is not talked about as much unfortunately, yet people, like myself go through this everyday. My project consists of three pen and ink drawings on canvas and each drawing will portray a portrait of a girl, who's been hurt by the terrible words that people have said to her in which developed the emotional abuse. With each portrait you will see the girl as she grows up and as she grows up you will see that she is showing a little bit more emotion. The terrible words that are in my poem are words that have been said to me when I was a lot younger and those words are actually going to feature in my drawings. I want people to understand that emotional abuse develops serious problems, like depression, low self esteem issues and health problems.

My goal is for people to understand the importance of emotional abuse and to not ignore this topic. People who suffer from emotional abuse often do not show signs that they are suffering. It's important for people to know the facts about emotional abuse and to talk to a loved one who you believe may be suffering.

Intercultural Dialogue

For my artist I chose Kim Jung Gi. He went to school in South Korea for art and design and he was also in the army. Here is where he was able to memorize different weapons and vehicle. He is able to draw things straight from memory in detail. Kim Jung Gi's artwork is mainly drawings. My collection of artwork is also just drawings, although not nearly as good as his, but we both share the similarity that our artworks are mainly drawings. I feel like his drawings have such a strong concept behind it and I will say that some of my drawings have strong concepts, especially my capstone drawings, so I would say that it is possible to establish a real dialogue between my work and his approach.

About Me

My Role as a Creative Contributor

I want my art to tell a story that people can relate to. I also want my art to stand for something. I want people to look at my art and see my pain and how I've overcome that pain and hope that, whatever they're going through, they can overcome it. Art that is relatable, art that has an important message and is displayed onto a blank canvas with pencil lines and brush strokes, is so beautiful to me. It's something that I have always admired when I look at artwork and go "I've felt that pain before, and if they're brave enough to share their story, so am I." So I want my artwork to have that same affect on someone else.
